Grey’s Anatomy 13x05 Review “Both Sides Now” (The Baby Whisperer) [Contributor: Julia Siegel]

“Both Sides Now”
Original Airdate: October 20, 2016

With the Alex-DeLuca situation taking most of the center stage this season, it’s time to take a short break and delve into a different topic. It’s baby fever time on Grey’s Anatomy this week, as Owen takes care of Harriet for the day and Amelia wonders if she is pregnant. On the flip side, an ethical issue and a miracle take place, which gives us a reason to smile at the end of the night.

BABY OR NO BABY?

Owen has wanted kids forever. Ever since he started a relationship with Christina years ago, he hasn’t stopped talking about wanting a large family. Naturally, this subject came up again last week with his new wife, Amelia. This week, Amelia is struggling with the fact that she may be pregnant, which is a fate she’s not quite ready to accept yet.

Amelia hasn’t had the easiest life, as she reminds us when she tells April that the last time she was pregnant, she didn’t have to tell the father since he was dead. For anyone who wasn’t sure what she was talking about, Amelia was referencing her days on Private Practice. I don’t blame Amelia for not being sure that she wants kids, especially when she’s only been married for a few weeks. The idea should be scary since everything is happening so quickly, so the reality of this situation is perfect.

However, Owen truly deserves a kid. He has had his hardships, too, so it’s time that something really good happens to him – not that marrying Amelia wasn’t great. Hopefully, I’m not the only one who thinks that Owen should get some serious happiness, but I think he will become more fortunate at some point this season. With April and Jackson having a baby, the baby fever is likely to last for a while.

THE TALE OF THE TWO LIVERS

The other storyline of the week deals with two people in need of a liver transplant. One patient, aptly named Granny June, has been on the UNOS list for three years, and her liver is finally coming. At the same time, a 25-year-old woman has a nasty case of heat stroke that leads to liver failure. Granny June’s new liver would be a perfect match for the dying woman, but is it ethically right to influence someone to give up the organ that will save their life?

This is a great ethical case study that probably comes up a lot in the medical world. These decisions don’t always come up on Grey’s, so it’s a real treat when a case this juicy gets served. What would you do if you had the choice to get an organ to save your life or to give it up to save someone else’s? Granny June’s decision may have been surprising, but a nice piece of writing saves the day.

The liver transplants bring some joy to the otherwise serious tone of the episode. It’s a nice, uplifting moment that was much needed. Next week’s episode is going to bring back the heavy drama, as teased in the scenes at the end of the episode. At least this week the characters got a bit of happiness this week.
