Like most parties, I was late to the Wynonna Earp festivities. After seeing AfterEllen contributor Dana Piccoli praise it on Twitter week after week, and the excited fans on Tumblr, I finally hit the screeners a few weeks before Comic-Con to see if the show lived up to the hype. Needless to say, I got way more than I could have ever expected.
Wynonna Earp follows Wyatt Earp’s granddaughter as she returns to her hometown of Purgatory on her 27th birthday and reluctantly takes the title as heir to the Earp curse. With the help of her sister Waverly, Agent Dolls of the Black Badge Division, and Doc Holliday (yes, that Doc Holliday), Wynonna must take down all of the Revenants — the resurrected souls of the criminals Wyatt Earp killed.
The show debuted this past spring right at the height of the Bury Your Gays controversy that was plaguing so many once-great television programs. The show quickly became a safe space for LGBTQ+ audiences who were tired of stray bullets taking the lives of their favorite lesbian characters and of showrunners viewing these characters as expendable. For many (myself included), you came to Wynonna Earp for the refreshing queer characters and stayed because it’s also amazing beyond that. This show is the perfect balance of dramedy, cheese, and heart.
When we got to the press room, we did not know yet that the show had been renewed — though we all were correct in our prediction that they would announce it at the panel that followed. Not knowing if the show was going to be renewed, though, did give us a chance to talk to the actors about more things than just what they wanted from the second season. From the short time I spent with each actor, it was evident that they love the fans as much as the fans love the show, and the close relationships the actors have on-screen are just as tight off-screen.
I sat down with the cast, along with comic creator Beau Smith, to talk about everything from their favorite moments from the first season to which cast member they would throw cold spaghetti at a la Grace Helbig. Checkout the interviews below, then watch the full San Diego Comic-Con panel here.
Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp)
