Just About Write Reacts to the 2015 Emmy Nominations - Comedy

Nomination day is always fun when you're a fan of television. We glue ourselves to our live streams and anxiously await the name of one of our favorite shows or actors or actresses. But what inevitably happens is this: their names aren't called and we end up disappointed and frustrated, chucking our breakfast food at the screen. This year, I have the distinct honor and pleasure of being in the company of some amazing ladies who all have opinions about the 2015 Emmy nominations, good and bad.

So I've decided to enlist them and help work through some Emmy apathy, anger, and joy by posting GIF reactions and thoughts about the primary categories. We've broken this up into two posts to make it a bit easier to read. My fabulous team of ladies includes:

LET'S DIVE IN!

Outstanding Comedy –
Louie
Modern Family
Parks and Recreation
Silicon Valley
Transparent
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Veep

JENN:

PARKS AND RECREATION IS FINALLY NOMINATED FOR OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES. THE BIG BANG THEORY (which surprisingly had a great season) IS NOT. UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT GETS SOME LOVE.

LIZZIE:

I’m torn. It’s like; in general, this is a really good category. No Big Bang Theory, but far be it for me to feel bad for THEM. But there’s also no Jane the Virgin. NO JANE THE VIRGIN. I mean, seriously?

LYNNIE:

I’m with Parks and Rec on this one, but all the nominees are super talented. I don’t get why Bob’s Burgers is limited to the Animated TV section, though. It’s the funniest thing on television right now. Seriously. I don’t care if it’s animated and not cool enough to sit with you. Change the rules, Emmy people. Change them now.

CHELSEA:

It's wonderful to see Veep and Parks And Recreation make their returns and to see Kimmy Schmidt and Transparent break into this category. If any of these four shows win, I will be a HAPPY CAMPER!

Lead Actor: Comedy –
Anthony Anderson, black-ish
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Will Forte, The Last Man On Earth
Louis C.K., Louie
William H. Macy, Shameless
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent

JENN:

So, this is the first year since 2008 – THAT IS ALMOST EIGHT YEARS AGO – that Jim Parsons isn’t nominated in this category. That’s insane, especially because out of all of the years, I think this is the year he deserves a nomination the most. I’m really surprised that the Emmys love Will Forte and The Last Man on Earth this year. It hasn’t been getting a lot of attention at all (at least from what I’ve seen) or good ratings. Good for black-ish and Louie and Transparent. I’m still baffled by perennial nominees LeBlenc and Cheadle. And Shameless should be a drama but that’s neither here nor there.

LIZZIE:

I’m really happy to see such an unexpected and diverse list. No complains here, really. This one’s all good with me.

JENNY:

Shameless, Episodes and House of Lies? Okaaaaaaaaay.

CHELSEA:

I started watching Transparent in the time between when I wrote my Emmy ballot and these nominations and I am super glad Papa Bluth got the love he deserved. I'll be cheering for him to take home the gold. Pleasantly surprised to see Anthony Anderson on here with Bill Macy and extremely excited about all of The Big Bang Theory snubs.

JEN:

Here's the problem. I don't watch comedies. I EMBRACE ONLY PAIN! I LIVE IN DARKNESS! Kidding. I'm going with my buddy Cheadle because... the answer is always Don Cheadle.

Lead Actress: Comedy –
Lisa Kudrow, The Comeback
Lily Tomlin, Grace And Frankie
Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler, Parks And Recreation
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

JENN:

N-O-P-E. While I love the love for Queen Amy Poehler in this category (and for Amy Schumer, who seems to be taking the world by storm these days), this category is invalid without Gina Rodriguez. She gave one of the most believable, empathetic, genuine performances on television this year. And she deserves to be recognized for it. I’ve heard Grace And Frankie is great and people love The Comeback. Edie Falco is CONSTANTLY nominated and I’m really bored of it, mostly because I hear NO ONE ever talk about watching Nurse Jackie. Julia is a shoe-in for the win unless the Emmys decide to give Amy her LONG OVERDUE AWARD for portraying one of the strongest women ever to exist on television. BOOM.

LIZZIE:

THIS ONE IS NOT AL GOOD WITH ME. IT’S ALL WRONG. WRONG, I TELL YOU. WRONG. Where is Gina Rodriguez? Where? Or Zooey Deschanel, for that matter. But the Gina Rodriguez snub is what hurts the most.

RAE:

Did the Emmys really nominate both of the Amys?! Amy Poehler's touching and hilarious performance on Parks and Rec grounded the show and turned it into a classic. And Amy Schumer is changing the world one dildo joke at a time. (If you doubt me, check out the episode of Inside Amy Schumer nominated for best directing, "12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer.")

CHELSEA:

As sad as I am that Ellie Kemper and Gina Rodriguez missed out on nominations, I cannot argue with any of these nominees. There are so many wonderful females on TV and I can't throw shade at any of them.

LYNNIE:

There were some snubs here, too, but I adore funny women, I adore these women in particular, and I don’t care who wins... as long as it’s Amy Schumer.

JEN:

The same comedy issue above applies, but even I've seen Parks and Rec's Amy Poeler GIFs. They are hysterical. It's Amy Poehler. One can only imagine what the woman can accomplish with a straight 30 minutes. Toss her some gold Academy if only for the acceptance speech.

Supporting Actor: Comedy –
Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Adam Driver, Girls
Keegan-Michael Key, Key & Peele
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tony Hale, Veep

JENN:

This comedy was always going to be impossible to please, but it’s an utter shame that Nick Offerman and Chris Pratt weren’t nominated. It’s also a shame that Jaime Camill isn’t nominated because Rogelio is absolutely the best character on television right now. Jane the Virgin didn’t get any Emmy love (apart from Anthony Mendez getting the WELL-DESERVED recognition for his narration), which makes me sad. I am, however, pleased that Titus Burgess got a nomination. The Emmys loved Kimmy Schmidt this year at least, which I’m thankful for.

LIZZIE:

The soundtrack for this category is Pharrell’s "Happy." THIS is the list I didn’t know I needed.

JENNY:

Sketch comedians never quite get the acting praise they deserve. Super psyched to see Keegan-Michael Key recognized for his broad range of characters.

CHELSEA:

TITUS! PINOR NOIR, CAVIAR! Tony Hale! Keegan-Michael Key! Only one actor from Modern Family. This is the kind of world I want to live in.

JEN:

I've watched Modern Family and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I said I don't watch comedies. I didn't say I live in a hole. Also, my husband makes me watch them with him sometimes. Maybe it's because I'm raising an 8-year old but I'm super into taking turns. Ty Burrell won an Emmy so it's Andre Braugher's turn this year.

Supporting Actress: Comedy –
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Niecy Nash, Getting On
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Allison Janney, Mom
Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
Gaby Hoffmann, Transparent
Jane Krakowski, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Anna Chlumsky, Veep

JENN:

Wow, I JUST realized how many women are in this category. EIGHT WOMEN. While I’m totally and 100% all for girl power, it’s a shame we couldn’t add a few more to the insanely overstuffed Supporting Actor – Comedy category. I feel… meh about this category. On the one hand, YAY FOR JANE KRAKOWSKI. YAY FOR KATE MCKINNON. Everyone else, I just… again, THE WOMEN OF PARKS AND RECREATION SHOULD GET SOME RECOGNITION PLEASE. But this is the last year so they won’t. I do love Mayim on TBBT though so I guess I can’t be too mad.

LIZZIE:

Music is still playing. I’m fine with this list. More than fine. I’m busting out the dance moves!

RAE:

Kate McKinnon, may you get everything you want in life, starting with this Emmy.

CHELSEA:

KATE FREAKING MCKINNON AND ANNA CHLUMSKY GIVE ME LIFE! Seriously, this category is so good that they had to have an extra nominee. I only disagree with two of them but everyone else is so great that I can live with them. They got the two most important ladies.

JEN:

I've lived in a world far too long in which Blossom does not have an Emmy. Let's remedy that Academy. Mayim Bialik for the win!

Writing: Comedy –
“Episode 409” (Episodes)
“Alive In Tucson” (The Last Man on Earth)
“Bobby’s House” (Louie)
“Two Days Of The Condor” (Silicon Valley)
“Pilot” (Transparent)
“Election Night” (Veep)

JENN:

Okay, the fact that "Leslie and Ron" was shut out from this category is a TRAVESTY. That’s easily the best, most amazing half hour of television from the past year. I refuse to live in a world where it won’t win an award for that bottle episode. Also, New Girl totally deserved to have a nomination for its stellar season. Jane the Virgin, too.

JENNY:

Four seasons in, Girls still feels fresh and irreverent, so why the writing snub for Lena Dunham? Also noticeably absent: Tina Fey, for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Overall, this category overlooks a lot of talented female writers.

CHELSEA:

Thank god Veep and Transparent made the cut for Comedy or else I'd be sleeping through this category.

DA SNUBS –

JENN: Besides Jane the Virgin, which is the snub I’m most upset about, I'm really bummed that Zooey Deschanel and New Girl were shut out. Also, it was always a pipe dream but the fact that Joel McHale was never nominated for an Emmy makes my heart sad.

RAE: That Jane the Virgin is only nominated for Outstanding Narrator is a travesty, even though it should definitely win that category.

STAY TUNED FOR OUR THOUGHTS ON THE DRAMA CATEGORIES!
